The darkest indigo in the wave’s trough reads as cool and threatening, while the lighter blue-grays in the sky feel neutral and distant. Even within a single color family, temperature shifts create emotional impact. The wave appears to surge forward because Hokusai gradually warmed the blues as they approach the boat, making them feel closer and more immediate.
Modern color theorists study this print to understand how monochromatic schemes can still create the illusion of depth and movement. This is what those master painters understood instinctively. Color isn’t fixed. A red apple isn’t just red.
